Women’s Fund Awards
$342,000 to Projects Serving Women and Girls in Miami-Dade
Miami—
Yesterday, 350 Women’s Fund of
Miami-Dade supporters and grantee partners celebrated the “power of
women’s giving” at the Fund’s Grant Award Breakfast at Parrot Jungle
Island. Women’s Fund awarded grants totaling $342,000 to 42 local
organizations working with women and girls. The funds, raised from
local donors, most of whom are also women, represent the largest
grant distribution in the Women’s Fund’s 14 year funding history.
“It was encouraging and
empowering to see so many different groups making change and doing
such good work,” said Teresa Sands, President of the National
Coalition of 100 Black Women, Greater Miami, one of the Fund’s 42
grantee partners. “We’re excited to be a part of this dynamic
organization that is helping to build a more cohesive community and
is working towards improving the lives of women and girls in
Miami-Dade.”
The 42 grants, which
range from $3,000 to $10,000, are funding a variety of services and
advocacy, including:
·
Supporting women workers in the
hospitality and nursery industries to launch a campaign to improve
their working conditions;
·
Bringing low-income single working
mothers out of poverty by providing them with free tax preparation
and access to the Earned Income Tax Credit;
·
Teaching journalism to teen-age girls
who will publish a magazine that encourages self-acceptance and
breaks the cycle of teen pregnancy;
·
Providing legal representation to
immigrant women and girls who are survivors of violence and abuse;
·
Teaching financial management and
wealth-building to low-income Haitian women.

Women's Fund of
Miami-Dade was founded in 1993 to fill the enormous funding gap that
existed for programs addressing the unmet needs of women and girls.
Throughout Women’s Fund’s 14-year history of grant making, the
organization has supported over 200 unique projects across the
County. The Fund’s community grant selection process, technical
assistance to organizations that serve women and girls and
