Q: What
led you to become a member of the Women’s Fund of Miami-Dade?
A: I learned about Women's Fund through
CREW-Miami.
The work of
the Women's Fund became extremely important to me when my granddaughters
were born. I had two sons, and two grandsons, and it surprised me that
watching my granddaughters grow would focus my attention on women's
issues. I started to think: are things as good for them now as they
could be? Have things changed enough from when I was growing up? And my
answer was "no".
Q: How has your relationship with the Women’s Fund grown?
A:
My
relationship with the Women's Fund has grown, first, because of the
symbiotic relationship between CREW and the Women's Fund. It is
wonderful for professional women to be able to give back and to support
women of all walks of life. It is important that women can earn money,
give money, determine where that money goes and how it is spent – and in
doing so, be an example to others.
Secondly, I have been able to connect my involvement with the Women's
Fund with my other love, the St. Martha-Yamaha Concert Series, an
ongoing world-class music series, at a venue in Miami Shores that has
incredible acoustics. We first created a relationship with Lotus House,
a Women's Fund grantee and shelter for homeless women. Lotus House is so
focused on the support and development of the women they serve, as whole
people. They have embraced the free tickets we offered, since good music
can be so enriching. Seeing the women from Lotus House, and now also
from other grantee organizations, who have been through so much, sitting
at these events along with some of Miami's leading men and women, is
just wonderful.
The Women's Fund has helped me get involved in multiple ways in addition
to just donating dollars. The Women's Fund is really a catalyst for
reaching women and making change. It is an organization that can adapt
to changes in the community while creatively working on small grassroots
efforts that making positive impacts on women and girls.
During the last five years, my community involvement has become more
focused and far more rewarding. Those are the same five years I have
been working with the Women's Fund. I know that isn't just a
coincidence!
